MARCH 2009

MOTTO: Restoring families to God’s order.

H.O.D: Kennedy Kephah M Mburu

Assistant: Magdalene Mumbi Ndung'u

SCOPE

The major responsibility of the Family Empowerment Department is to ensure that each child’s family is fully functional. This is important because the child on restoration needs to grow in a family that is functioning well both with each other and with God too.
It’s our desire that after the period of Social worker – client relation, the family should, in the shortest time possible, be empowered to function optimally and on their own.
While administering empowerment, different aspects of life are considered. These include:

Spiritual Empowerment – It is the heart of empowerment and foundation of effective living.

How:
 Prayer – we are required to pray with and for the family on the ground, individually and as a team.

 God’s word – share with the family on the ground and encourage this worthy practice.

 Counseling – as social workers, we are required to professionally help the clients to come up with problem solving abilities. This helps them to deal with their issues effectively without depending on the team.

 Identifying their needs – foundational issues which may include drunkenness, marital issues, anger, sexual sins, poverty, family structures etc

 Networking – Government structures, sound Churches and Mentors

Economic Empowerment:
 Being wind beneath their wings i.e being their support where they are performing well..
 Partnering with them in what they are doing e.g. business, farming etc.

Capacity Building:

Definitions
o Capacity Building is the STRENGHTHENING OF THE ABILITIES of individuals/ communities to effectively manage their OWN DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES in order to ACHIEVE their GOALS and OBJECTIVES

o Empowerment: This is the PROCESS of enhancing the capacity of individuals or groups to MAKE CHOICES  and to transform those choices into desired actions and outcomes

What we do;
 Identifying areas that the families need to be encouraged
 Where they can perform better but are not at the moment maximizing their potential.
 Parenting course; encouraging them to be better/founded parents’ i.e. effective fathers and mothers.

TESTIMONY: A family receives a new house and a cow. This is one of our foster families. Last year in August, we built a new house for them. Their former house was in a pathetic condition. They also received a cow as an empowerment. All this was made possible by our friends from Swansea UK.
